Staying Sane During the Holidays

It’s that time of year! Here are a few strategies that may help save your sanity.

Eat what you love, leave what you like
Instead of piling your plate with things that you don’t really love, pick only the foods that give you true enjoyment. Give yourself permission to enjoy your favorite foods guilt-free, and then get back on track with your normal eating routine. Since avoiding alcoholic beverages altogether can be hard during this time of the year, alternating between sparkling water and your favorite alcoholic beverage can prevent you from adding extra pounds.

Stay active
Exercise can be the first thing to fall by the wayside during the holidays. Staying active during the holidays not only helps relieve the stress of holiday craziness but working out can actually give you more energy when you feel exhausted. Even a 20-minute walk outside or on a treadmill is beneficial.

Plan fewer activities
There are a million things to do over the holiday season. Avoid becoming overwhelmed by just saying ‘no’ to some invitations. If you try to do them all, they can stop being fun and become stressful. So pick a few things, maybe the ones you're most excited about or the ones you think your family will love and do only those. Limiting the number of things you commit to will reduce your stress.

Get outside
Beat the blues by making sure to spend some time outside - even if it isn’t sunny. Staying in a warm, cozy house may also mean you’re more at risk for vitamin D deficiency, which research suggests might be linked to daytime sleepiness.

Take the stress out of gift exchanges
If you’ve tried it, you know that the idea of focusing on one nice gift for a single person instead of lots of small presents for everyone in your extended family can be really calming.
